Shamrocks Advance to Semifinals of Northwood Invitational

This past weekend the Boston Shamrocks traveled to Lake Placid, New York for the 37th annual Northwood Invitational Hockey Tournament. The Shamrocks played 3 round robin games.

First up was HTI Lady Stars from Ontario, Canada. The Shamrocks got out to an early 2-0 lead. The first goal came on the power play from a point shot by Michaela Boyle with assists from Ali O’Leary and Jordan Hoyda. The second goal came short-handed after a nice chip from Aly PeperAmanda Conway went the length of the ice and sniped far side.

Headed into the second half the Shamrocks were up 2-0. HTI stormed back with 3 unanswered goals taking a 3-2 lead. The Shamrocks tied the game up at 3, after a point shot by Peper tipped by Nicole Lorenzo was buried by Boyle with just over 4 minutes left in the game. Kia Castonguay was solid in the pipes for the Shamrocks stopping 20 shots.

Next up for the Shamrocks was Wyoming Seminary. In this game the Shamrocks scored early and often. Lorenzo scored her first of 3 to start the scoring after a nice pass from Sarah KingBoyle scored on the power play to go up 2-0. Cassidy McNeeley scored on a rebound in front, for her first of 2 on the night to make it 3-0. Lorenzo put a rebound in the back of the net for her second of the night, after a textbook far pad shot by Conway to make it 4-0. After Delaney Guimont forced a neutral zone turnover Conway went in alone and scored to make it 5-0. In the last minute of the first half McNeeleyscored from her backside while battling in front on the power play to make it 6-0 after a point shot by Guimont.

Heading into the second half the Shamrocks kept their foot on the gas scoring another 4 goals. The first came from Sophia Quick on the again power play after a great rush and shot from the wing to make it 7-0. King scored on her own rebound to make it 8-0. After confusing the goalie with a laser off the crossbar from BoyleGuimont was able to blast a point shot into the empty net from the point to make it 9-0. Lorenzo completed the hat trick after a pass from Courtney Kelly for the 10th goal of the night. Kate Turner was solid in net stopping 11 of 12 shots that she faced.

In the Shamrocks final game of the round robin they faced off against the Walpole Express. The Shamrocks scored first on a goal by Conway assisted by Lorenzo. The second came later in the first half on another goal by Conway assisted byKathleen McHugh.

The shamrocks came out flat and the Walpole Express were able to tie it up at 2 early in the second half. Conwaycompleted the hat trick scoring the game winner on an individual effort – blocking the shot and skating the length of the ice, sniping low glove. Castonguay made some huge saves late to secure the win. She stopped 24 of 26 shots that she faced. With this win the Shamrocks advanced to the semi finals and faced off against top seed Stanstead College.

Stanstead came out strong scoring 4 early goals in the first half. The Shamrocks found their legs and started to battle back. Conway scored to bring the Shamrocks within 3 before the first half ended.

Stanstead extended their lead on the power play early in the second half which seemed to fire the Shamrocks up who scored 2 quick goals in response. McHugh scored assisted by Boyle and Conway scored shortly thereafter to bring the shamrocks back within 2. Unable to capitalize on some great late game opportunities the Shamrocks fell 6-3.

The Shamrocks return home for 2 weeks of practice before heading to Penticton, British Columbia, Canada for a North/South JWHL weekend.
